Creating a Healthy Habitat: Room Temperature Guidelines

living room with the thermostat

What counts as the ideal home temperature depends on several factors, including location, time of year, and personal preference. Generally, the healthiest temperature for your home is between 68 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit. Most people find this range comfortable, and it can help prevent health issues such as dehydration, heat exhaustion, and hypothermia.

Moreover, the optimal temperature for each room in your house varies. Take the bedroom, for example: it should be cooler than the rest of the house, between 60 and 67 degrees Fahrenheit. This range can help you sleep more soundly and lower the risk of sleep-related health issues. With these tips, you and your loved ones can stay comfortable and healthy year-round.

Adjust Home Temperatures as Needed

Lots of people find that a temperature range between 68 and 76 degrees Fahrenheit works perfectly. But the best temperature can vary depending on the individual or the room.

For instance, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends about 64 degrees Fahrenheit for a healthy, fully dressed adult. This temperature is also considered best for sleep. In fact, they advise that the disabled, elderly, or young be in rooms no cooler than 68 degrees Fahrenheit to avoid health risks. Regardless, if you or a household member has allergies or respiratory issues, the room temperature should ideally stay above 61 degrees Fahrenheit. Lower temperatures can cause breathing problems, especially for those with asthma or allergies.

Optimal Temperature by Room

Adjust the temperature in particular rooms for optimal health and comfort based on where you spend most of your time. Consider these temperatures:

  • Living Room: A living room temperature between 68 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit is often advised for optimal health. Colder temperatures can make you feel cold and unsettled, and hotter temperatures can bring on overheating and dehydration.
  • Bedroom: Because you spend much of the night in your bedroom, it’s important to keep it comfortable and healthy for sleep. To do this, keep the temperature between 60-67 degrees Fahrenheit. This range helps regulate your body temperature as you sleep and prevents sweating or shivering.
  • Kitchen: Due to increased activity during cooking or baking, the kitchen should be cooler than the other rooms in your house. A kitchen temperature between 60-64 degrees Fahrenheit is ideal. This range keeps the room comfortable and can help prolong the shelf life of certain foods.
  • Bathroom: Keep the bathroom temperature lower than other rooms in your rental home to prevent mold and mildew. The low 70s is a good range. This range can help keep fungi from spreading and eliminate musty odors.

Keep a close eye on any signs of ill health that your body may show. If you’re too hot or too cold, it may mean the temperature needs adjusting. Likewise, if you notice symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, or dry skin, the temperature may not be optimal for your health.

Make sure your rental home is properly insulated to prevent heat loss in the winter months. Also, block summer sunlight with curtains or blinds to keep your home cool. You might also use a programmable thermostat to set the temperature automatically to match your schedule and preferences.
